damping

n. a diminution of the amplitude of vibrations, often as a result of absorption of energy (e.g., electricity, sound) by the surrounding medium. In speech and singing, it refers to the tension and elongation of the vocal cords beyond the normal maximal level in an attempt to reach still higher tones on the ascending scale.
