cytokine
n. any of a variety of small proteins or peptides that are released by cells as signals to those or other cells. Each type stimulates a target cell that has a specific receptor for that cytokine. Cytokines mediate many immune responses, including proliferation and differentiation of lymphocytes, inflammation, allergies, and fever.
