loneliness, anxiety, and confusion experienced by an individual or group that has been suddenly thrust into an alien culture or otherwise encounters radical cultural change. For example, a Filipino student studying at an American university may experience culture shock, as may a businessperson traveling abroad.

granular cortex

the portion of the cerebral cortex that contains granule cells, which are located in layers II and IV of the cortex (see cortical layers). The term refers particularly to primary sensory cortex, in which layer IV (the major input area) is very thick. Compare agranular cortex.
