cultural deprivation

1. lack of opportunity to participate in the cultural offerings of the larger society due to such factors as economic deprivation, substandard living conditions, or discrimination. See pseudoretardation.

2. loss of identification with one’s cultural heritage as a result of assimilation into a larger or dominant culture. See deculturation.

self as observer

the self that has access to conscious experiences and knowledge, including knowledge of the self. In the thought of William James, it contrasts with the self as known and is synonymous with the “I” (see nominative self). See also self as agent.
