cross-cuing

n. the use of one sense modality to identify an object when another, more direct sense modality is not available. For example, commissurotomy (the split-brain technique) has revealed that auditory information may be used to name a visual object when visual information is not available to the cerebral hemisphere mainly responsible for speech.
