covering-law model

a model for scientific explanation positing that a phenomenon is explained only if it can be deduced from a set of statements among which is at least one general scientific law. Thus, a phenomenon can be explained only if it can be predicted. See also deductive-nomological model. [proposed by German philosopher of science Carl Gustav Hempel (1905–1997)]
