counterculture

n. a social movement that maintains its own alternative mores and values in opposition to prevailing cultural norms. The term is historically associated with the hippie movement and attendant drug culture of the late 1960s and early 1970s, which rejected such societal norms as the work ethic and the traditional family unit.
