corticotropin

n. a hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, particularly when a person experiences stress. It stimulates the release of various other hormones (primarily corticosteroids) from the adrenal cortex, the outer layer of the adrenal gland. Also called adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH); adrenocorticotropin.
