corpus luteum

corpus luteum

a yellowish glandular mass in the ovary that remains after a graafian follicle has ruptured and released an ovum. Its development is stimulated by luteinizing hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, and it functions as a transient endocrine gland, secreting progesterone.
