cooperative breeding

a type of mating system in which typically only one male and one female breed while other group members help in taking care of the offspring (see alloparenting). Subordinate animals are reproductively inhibited, either physiologically or behaviorally; they have few options other than to assist the breeding pair and wait for a breeding vacancy to occur.
