controlled trial

a study in which patients with a particular condition, disease, or illness are assigned either to a treatment group, which receives the new intervention under investigation, or to a control group, which receives either no intervention or some standard intervention already in use. If individuals are allocated to the different groups at random, then the design is a randomized clinical trial. Also called comparative trial.
