controlled sampling

a method of choosing cases for research in which certain characteristics are considered undesirable and the probability of their being selected is therefore minimized. For example, an educational researcher may need to adjust his or her sampling technique if certain subsets of students are costly to find or if their obtained data may exert undue influence upon study results or otherwise present logistical difficulties.
