controlled association

a technique in which a constraint is imposed on the participant’s responses such that the given response relates to the stimulus in accordance with specific directions. For example, in an experiment involving presentation of stimulus words, the participant may be directed to give a synonym or antonym of each word. Also called constrained association. See free association.
