constant comparative analysis

a procedure for evaluating qualitative data in which the information is coded and compared across categories, patterns are identified, and these patterns are refined as new data are obtained. For example, a researcher might use constant comparative analysis to assess responses to interview questions, creating categories of answers according to the perspectives expressed, examining their different items, and integrating categories or revising their properties before formulating a theory. Also called constant-comparison method.

n. a diagnostic procedure that uses low-dose X-ray photography to detect breast tumors or other abnormalities, either noncancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant). The X-ray negative produced is called a mammogram.
