configural-cue approach

an experimental approach based on the theory that the response to a compound stimulus is to its whole rather than to its individual parts; as such, it contrasts with the stimulus-element approach, which posits that each part of a compound stimulus is perceived the way it would be as an individual stimulus.

estimator

n. a quantity calculated from the values in a sample according to some rule and used to give an approximation of the value in a population. For example, the sample mean or average is an estimator for the population mean; the value of the sample mean is the estimate.
