conditional positive regard

an attitude of acceptance and esteem that others express toward an individual on a conditional basis, that is, depending on the acceptability of the individual’s behavior in accordance with the others’ personal standards. In his theory of personality, Carl Rogers proposed that although the need for positive regard is universal, conditional regard works against sound psychological development and adjustment in the recipient. Compare unconditional positive regard.
