comparable worth

the principle that men and women should be paid equally for work requiring similar skills and responsibilities. In other words, comparable worth advocates equal pay for work of equal value, such as a woman working as a receptionist and a man working as a mailroom clerk. The principle has been invoked as a means of closing the gender pay gap and remedying systematic discrimination in pay for female-dominated occupations in comparison to male-dominated occupations with similar behaviors and demands. Also called pay equity. See equity theory.
