the effect of one color upon another when they are viewed in proximity. In simultaneous contrast, complementary colors, such as yellow and blue, are enhanced by each other: The yellow appears yellower, and the blue appears bluer. In successive contrast, the complement of a color is seen after shifting focus to a neutral surface.
