the amounts of different colors that are most pleasing with each other. German poet and scholar Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) was the first to formulate a mathematical description of color balance; his work was amplified by U.S. painter Albert H. Munsell (1858–1918). See also Munsell color system.
