cold-deck imputation

one of several methods of inserting values for missing data (see imputation) in which missing observations are replaced by values from a source unrelated to the data set under consideration. Suppose, for example, that a patient questionnaire was administered in a hospital and that five people failed to respond to an item. Substituting responses from a similar item on a survey conducted previously would be an example of cold-deck imputation. Compare hot-deck imputation.
