cognitive appraisal theory

the theory that cognitive evaluation is involved in the generation of each and every emotion. Evaluation includes both a primary appraisal and a secondary appraisal. This concept is elaborated in the cognitive–motivational–relational theory, which recognizes that cognition is one of three simultaneously operating processes that contribute to the generation of any emotion.
