n.

1. a quantity or value that serves as a measure of some property. For example, the correlation coefficient is a measure of linear relatedness and a regression coefficient is a measure of the relationship between a predictor and a response variable.

2. in algebra, a scalar that multiplies a variable in an equation. For example, in the equation y = bx, the scalar quantity b is said to be a coefficient.
