a test that requires participants to translate one set of symbols into another, for example, by writing California in numbers that stand for letters according to the code A = 3, B = 4, C = 5, and so on. Also called coding test; symbol-substitution test. See cryptarithmetic; cryptogram. See also symbol–digit test.
