adj. denoting a style, mode of operation, or function that was typical or standard at some time in the past. In psychology, for instance, the term classical conditioning was used to contrast Pavlovian conditioning with newly recognized operant conditioning when the distinction between the two forms of learning was pointed out by B. F. Skinner in 1938.
