civil rights movement

any collective effort to gain political or social rights denied by government, usually by such means as demonstrations, lobbying, and civil disobedience. When capitalized, the term usually refers to the struggle for full constitutional rights by African Americans as it originated and developed in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s.
