cingulotomy

n. a procedure used in the treatment of chronic pain in which electrodes are used to destroy portions of the cingulum bundle. It is also, albeit rarely, used in the treatment of some chronic mental disorders (e.g., obsessive-compulsive disorder) that have not responded to other, nonsurgical forms of treatment. Also called cingulumotomy.
