chromosome number

the number of chromosomes present in the tissue cells of an individual. All members of a species normally have the same number of chromosomes. The normal number for humans is 46. In most mammals, the chromosome number of a gamete, or reproductive cell, is half the somatic chromosome number; for example, in humans, it is 23. See deletion.
