choroid layer

the vascular pigmented layer of tissue that covers the back of the eye and is located between the retina and the sclera. In the anterior portion of the eye it is continuous with the pigmented portion of the ciliary body. The pigment in the choroid layer absorbs stray light; the blood vessels include the choriocapillaris, a plexus of capillaries that provides oxygen and sustenance to the photoreceptors of the retina. Also called choroid; choroid coat.
