choice axiom

a mathematical model of decision making that assumes, given several alternatives from which to choose, the probability that a particular alternative will be picked is independent of the sequence of decisions. [developed in 1959 by U.S. mathematician and psychologist R. Duncan Luce (1925–2012)]
