a mental health approach for children that focuses not only on treatment but also on the prevention of possible future disorders by offering instruction, information, and therapeutic aid to the child and his or her family. Child-guidance services and treatment are typically provided by specialized child-guidance clinics. The child-guidance movement emerged in the early 20th century and was at its strongest from the 1940s to 1970s.
