chemical stimulation

activity or a change of activity generated in olfactory (smell) or gustatory (taste) receptor cells by contact with specific electrolytes or molecules. Both chemical senses have specialized receptor proteins to which stimulating molecules bind to create electrical potentials. These potentials are passed on to peripheral nerves that transmit the message to the central nervous system for interpretation. See chemoreceptor.
