charity

n. any act that benefits other people who lack essential resources or otherwise are in need of assistance. Unlike altruism, charitable behavior may be carried out with the expectation of benefits in return. For example, a person who volunteers time at an organization that provides food and shelter to those who are homeless may do so primarily to be recognized in the local newspaper.
