certainty of paternity

the degree to which a putative parent can be certain that he, she, or it is the parent of an offspring. Because of internal fertilization and gestation, all female mammals are certain of maternity, but no male mammal can be 100% certain of paternity. In birds, brood parasitism can trick parents of both sexes into caring for chicks unrelated to either parent.
