central moment

a moment that describes the shape of a set of scores with regard to its deviation about the mean. Four common central moments that describe a random variable are the mean (the first central moment), the variance (the second central moment), the skewness (the third central moment), and the kurtosis (the fourth central moment). Also called moment about the mean.
