carotid artery

either of the two major arteries that ascend the right and left sides of the neck to the head and brain. The branch that enters the brain is the internal carotid artery, whereas the external carotid artery supplies the face and scalp. Both branches arise from the common carotid artery on each side of the lower neck.

the process of using correlations between variables to hypothesize about future events and outcomes. For example, a university administrator may use a regression equation to predict a student’s college grade point average with reasonable accuracy from measures of performance in high school, such as scores on tests and final grades in classes.
