cardinal virtues

in medieval philosophy, the four virtues on which all other virtues were thought to hinge, namely, prudence, courage, temperance, and justice. The cardinal or “natural” virtues were seen as available to all humans without the aid of divine grace; as such they were often contrasted with the “theological” virtues of faith, hope, and charity.
