carbamate

n. any of a class of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (see cholinesterase) used in the treatment of dementia. Carbamates can delay the progression of certain dementias, slowing declines in cognitive function and in activities of daily living. They are preferred to earlier generations of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors because of their relatively benign side effects, relative lack of liver toxicity, and improved dosing schedule (they need to be administered only once or twice a day). An example is rivastigmine.
