captivity

n.

1. the state or period of being confined, detained, incarcerated, imprisoned, or enslaved. See also postcaptivity health problems; prisoner of war.

2. the state of a nonhuman animal that is housed in an environment different from its natural environment and is prevented from returning to its natural environment. Much research is done on animals in captivity in order to have careful experimental control over environmental and social variables. Compare field research.
