bulbar paralysis

a condition arising usually from a defect in the motor portions of the medulla oblongata and involving paralysis of the muscles of the lips, tongue, mouth, pharynx, and larynx, resulting in difficulties in chewing, swallowing, and talking. Causes may include myasthenia gravis, motor neuron disease, or tumor. Also called bulbar palsy; progressive bulbar palsy.
