brainstem auditory evoked response

an event-related potential recorded from the brainstem in response to an auditory stimulus (see auditory evoked potential). Such recordings are used to diagnose abnormalities of the nervous system, hearing deficits in infants and young children, and neurological malfunctioning. Also called auditory brainstem evoked response; auditory brainstem response (ABR); brainstem evoked potential.
