bilirubin encephalopathy

a degenerative disease of the brain caused by deposition of the bile pigment bilirubin in the basal ganglia and brainstem nuclei. The condition results from disorders in producing or breaking down bilirubin in the liver. This may be seen in newborns who are unable to metabolize bilirubin adequately.
