bias–variance tradeoff

the situation in which increasing the complexity of a model to better account for the observed relationships among a set of variables reduces the precision of any estimated values subsequently derived from that model. That is, the model becomes so specific to the particular sample from which it was derived that it no longer is an accurate representation of the larger population of interest. Researchers therefore tend to seek a balance, opting for either greater intricacy or greater certainty as circumstances warrant.
