The battlefield performance of a soldier is directly related to the quality and amount of realistic unit and individual training that the soldier has received. Training must be related to the wartime mission of a unit and to the conditions it can expect to face. Live-fire training prepares soldiers for the shock and noise of combat. It not only helps to inoculate soldiers to the stresses of operations (including combat) but also enables them to learn methods for coping with their reactions to these stresses. Previous operational experience (especially in combat) also helps to prepare soldiers for future situations. See also stress training.
