bar graph

a graph in which bars of varying height with spaces between them are used to display data for variables defined by qualities or categories. For example, to show the political affiliations of Americans, the different parties (e.g., Democrat, Republican, Independent) would be listed on the x-axis, and the height of the bar rising above each party would represent the number or proportion of people in that category. Also called bar chart; bar diagram. See also histogram.
