auditory filter

the process responsible for the frequency selectivity of the auditory system. The initial stages of auditory processing are often described as consisting of a bank of auditory filters with different center frequencies. The term is closely related to the concept of a critical band but with more emphasis on the “shape” or characteristics of the filter rather than simply its critical bandwidth.
