auditory discrimination

the ability to distinguish between sounds. For example, pitch discrimination is the ability to detect changes in sound based upon the subjective attribute of pitch. It is more appropriately called frequency discrimination, however, because of uncertainty that the discrimination is based upon pitch (e.g., under certain circumstances, a change in frequency produces a change in loudness, and the discrimination could be based on a loudness change rather than a pitch change).
