theory of reasoned action

theory of reasoned action

the theory that attitudes toward a behavior and subjective norms (perceived expectations) regarding a behavior determine a person’s intention to perform that behavior. Intentions are in turn assumed to cause the actual behavior. Also called reasoned action model. See also theory of planned behavior. [originally proposed by U.S. social psychologists Martin Fishbein (1936–2009) and Icek Ajzen (1942–  )]
