asylum

asylum

n.

1. originally, a refuge for criminals (from Greek asylon, “sanctuary”). From the 19th century, the terms asylum or insane asylum were applied to mental institutions. These names are now obsolete, discarded because of their emphasis on refuge rather than treatment.

2. the right to remain in a country, granted by the government of that country to individuals escaping oppression, war, or political unrest in their country of origin or allegiance.
