astrocyte

n. a star-shaped nonneuronal central nervous system cell (glia) with numerous extensions that run in all directions. Astrocytes provide structural support for the brain, are responsible for many homeostatic controls, and may isolate receptive surfaces. Recent research suggests that they may play a role in potassium neurotransmission. Also called astroglia.
