associative anamnesis

associative anamnesis

a psychiatric interview technique in which the patient gives an autobiographical account of his or her history and difficulties, while the therapist listens for key words and expressions that are then used to establish an associative linkage that will bring the patient closer to the unconscious roots of his or her disturbance. [developed by Austrian-born U.S. physician and psychoanalyist Felix Deutsch (1884–1964)]
